Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.John 2:4
Why does Jesus call Mary “Woman” and not “Mother?”
This is certainly not a term of disrespect. We will find that Jesus will call her this once again when He is on the cross and presents her to John so that he may take care of her. He was showing her the utmost respect on that occasion.
I believe He uses the term to distance Himself from His earthly ties. His powers as the Son of God do not come from, nor are the subject to, His earthly mother.
Mary was truly blessed more than any other woman in human history, but her relationship is to the body of the man Christ. She is not the mother of God nor of God’s eternal Son.
Therefore, it would be improper for men to call upon Mary in prayer to ask her son something for us.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus1st Timothy 2:5
