Jesus is saying, “This is what I do.”
I challenge those that claim to have the power or means to cause the new birth to raise themselves from the dead three days later! Oh wait, they can't hear me!
We cannot bring ourselves to Christ, nor would we have the desire to come to Him. And, even if our loved ones desired that we be raised to spiritual life, they do not have the power to bring us to Christ.
It takes nothing less the VOICE of the Son of God!
If Nicodemus does not understand depravity, why would he be looking for themes of restoration by mercy and grace?
Before we are born again, we are only natural creatures operating with natural understanding. We cannot understand spiritual things.
If we were true to the understanding of our own depraved nature separate from the grace of God, we would only rejoice in this sovereign act of God! He did what we CANNOT do!
Jesus is not teaching that you have to be both physically born and spiritually born.
Simply put, the only way to see or enter into the kingdom of God is by a marvelous and irresistible act of grace performed on a person by the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit.
