Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
John 5:39
Searching is not just taking a casual look at something. It is an earnest effort to seek out facts and details.
When I was a boy, we traveled by car quite a bit. The long Texas highways were lined with ranch land enclosed by barbed wire fences. To occupy my time on these trips, I spent a lot of time looking at those fences. I found that if I just looked out the window and watched the fence posts fly by that I would soon get sleepy. This was great for the car ride because the trip seemed a lot shorter if I was asleep!
Sometimes though I would try to look at details of the fences. If I picked one fence post ahead of the car as far as I could see, I could watch that one post. And, as it passed my car window, I could see details of the post including the fact that it was mesquite wood, it had 4 or 5 wires, and I might even catch the details of the number of knots and condition of the bark. I would then try to imagine what the tree looked like that the post came from.
My point is this, when I would search out the details about the fence posts, I discovered so much more than just looking randomly out the window of the car. My mind was engaged and I was learning. Oh, and I wasn’t mindlessly falling asleep! The car ride was still long but I was not bored because I was engaged in exploring what was going on around me.
This is how we should approach the word of God. We need to be searching for the details of Jesus on every page of the Bible. The Old and New Testaments are the story of Who Jesus is, how glorious He is, and what He has done for us!
Let’s not coast through life mindlessly glancing at the things in the Bible. Let us diligently seek out the details, engage our minds, and explore the wonders of our great and glorious King!
