Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

Matthew 7:24-25

One of the most fundamental things we need to learn from the Sermon on the Mount is that Jesus expects us to live differently than the rest of the world. A wise person will hear the teachings of the Bible, or read them, and then apply them to how he walks, talks, does business, etc.

Remember, the people of God are “called out” from the world to walk as children of God.

When we follow Jesus in our daily walk, we are not guaranteed an easy life with no troubles at all. In fact, the devil may attack us even more because we are following Jesus. He hates that! What we are guaranteed is that our life will not shatter into irreparable pieces. If we are following Christ when the storm comes, our house will not fall!

The Rock on which we build our lives should be the Lord Jesus Christ. His amazing and finished work on the cross should be the foundation for everything we do throughout our lives and day by day. Jesus has promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore, we can take our worries to Him. We can ask Him for direction in our personal or business life. We can learn from His word how to make good decisions in marriage, raising our children, working our secular jobs, and so on. You name it, Jesus is the answer and the help.

According to the account in Luke 6, it takes work and dedication to live this way. We have to “dig deep” to find that foundation on which to build. It’s not just a simple decision, it is a life challenging work.

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

Luke 6:48

Remember, the child of God is a blessed individual. The Beatitudes in Matthew 5 are not things that the world would consider to be a blessing. However, the key is that those are evidences of our election in Christ! If we have experienced those things, we are the children of God.

When we realize that, doesn’t it just make sense to live our lives holding on to our Father’s unchanging hand?
