Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
Matthew 13:44
The man in this story was so excited about finding the hidden treasure, he sold everything he had and bought the entire field!
When we truly see the kingdom of Christ, we see its amazing value. All the riches and possessions of the world pale in comparison to the fellowship of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus taught a similar principle in the Sermon on the Mount:
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew 6:33
Rather than worrying about how we will eat and live, we are to focus on serving the Lord for He has promised to take care of our needs. Earlier in the same sermon, Jesus said:
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Matthew 6:19-21
What we value the most will have our devotion of time, money, and life. This parable reminds us to take a closer look at ourselves and see where our heart of devotion truly is. To what do we devote the most time and effort? That is our treasure, good or bad. Jesus is teaching us that not only should we be thankful in word for the gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus, we should be thankful in all the deeds of our lives. We need to forsake all worldly and personal desires to enjoy the kingdom.
Moreover, we should buy the field wherein we found the treasure. This means that we should be devoted to the Lord through the church where we were blessed to hear of His marvelous grace. A person that says he loves the Lord but does not attend public worship, fellowship with the saints, or spend time in the Bible, has not bought the field. Jesus gave all for his elect. As His elect family we should then give all our life for Him. Afterall, it is JOY!
