And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus’ feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
Luke 8:40-42
There are so many accounts where the religious leaders among the Jews rejected Christ or at least cast doubt toward His ministry and authority. So, it is remarkable when we find one who recognizes the power that Jesus has and seeks for His help!
In this scene, Jesus and His disciples have just returned from the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jairus was one of the rulers of the local synagogue. He was known by all and probably was very aware of the teachings and miracles that Jesus had done in that area. But, he does not come to discredit Jesus or to try to trick Him with open-ended questions. The first thing this leader does is…
Fall at the feet of Jesus!
This act of reverence and honor was an unusual gesture for anyone in authority to do much less one of the rulers of the synagogue. Jairus had a problem that he knew only one man could help and that man was Jesus. He honored Jesus and testified what he knew Jesus could do by simply laying His hands on his dying daughter. At his lowest point of fear and distress, he did not care what his fellow rulers thought. Nor did he concern himself about how he looked to the community. He needed help and did not hide his pleading for fear of ridicule or mocking. He went to Jesus. He went in the day time. He went and fell down at the feet of the Great Physician!
Oh, that we could see this in our Savior! Jesus is our only source of hope, comfort, and help. He may use men to accomplish these things, but the power and mercy have only one source – Jesus the King!
