How can God, Who owns everything, be homeless?

That is an excellent question!

It is true that God does own everything. He owns all the universe and has dominion over everything. Consider the words of the Psalmist:

The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

Psalms 24:1

So, how is that Jesus says that He has no place to lay His head at night?

The key to this passage is the title that Jesus uses for Himself – the Son of man. This is both a title for the Messiah and a description of what Jesus did for us.

First of all, Son of man is a well-known title for the Messiah in the Old Testament:

Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.

Psalms 80:17

I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Daniel 7:13-14

Therefore, when Jesus is calling Himself the Son of man, He is not denying that He is God. He is telling them and us that He is the Messiah, the Son of God come in the flesh.

The fact that Jesus would humble Himself and take on the form of a servant as He did is a great mystery and wonderful blessing at the same time! 

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Philippians 2:7-8

Christ’s death on the cross secured salvation for the elect of God. Without that sacrifice, we would all be lost!

As for being homeless, we need to realize that it was by His choice. He laid aside His glorious crown for us.

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

2nd Corinthians 8:9

Jesus was homeless so that we could have an eternal mansion in glory!
