And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

Mark 8:22-26

I do not believe there are any accidents in the Bible, neither do I believe that certain things appear in order by accident. The text we have before us today is included only Mark’s gospel account. Jesus has healed blind people before in various ways, and He once again heals this man in a different way. Some feel that Mark may have just been recording the sequence of what happened next after Jesus questions His disciples about bread, and that may very well be the case. However, I think we can learn a very valuable lesson when we look at this event connected with what went before.

Jesus had just asked them, “Why do you not understand?” He challenges them to use their faith and their natural memories to understand that Jesus would take care of them and fulfill all He came to do. The disciples doubted because they had quickly forgotten about the miracles of feeding two different, very large, groups of people. They didn’t need to be concerned with natural bread, they needed to be on guard against the evil influences of false doctrine that they would soon face. Jesus used their doubt about natural bread as a teaching moment to show them their real duty.

This miracle recorded in Mark fits perfectly to serve as yet another reminder to them and us that Jesus is always active and caring for His people. Jesus had healed before, but He shows yet another way He can heal and be faithful to His earthly ministry. Therefore, we should not concern ourselves with the things that Jesus said He will do. Jesus is faithful! We need to be faithful with what we are assigned to do. 

We need to be in the word of God searching for wisdom from our Heavenly Father. We need to be putting everything that comes into our lives on trial by comparing it to God’s word. We need to be ready to stand against anything the devil and this world throws at us.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
