Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:31-34

Worry is a sin.

Jesus is telling in this passage that we should not be overly concerned about our daily needs. He is not saying to quit our jobs and join a commune. He is simply stating that our attitude about providing for ourselves and others should not be one that consumes us with worry.

The Gentiles during that time had many different religions but one common thread was that of idolatry. They had an idol for everything! They set up an idol during planting time. They set up another idol during growing season. They set up yet another idol at harvest. They were so concerned (worried) that they wanted to make sure they had all their bases covered. But here is the key. They had to “set up” these idols. That means these “gods” had no power of their own. Therefore, they were of no help. Furthermore, the purpose of the idols was also very selfish. They were concerned with providing for themselves.

Jesus teaches us that we do not need to be worried about ourselves. We need to be focused on the kingdom of God which involves serving others.

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

Philippians 2:4

Further, Jesus says the solution to worry is to focus on the Kingdom of God. But not just casually! They key is to seek.

Seeking takes effort. Lots of it. But when we are diligently seeking to serve God by serving others, we will find that not only are our needs met, we will have enough to help others as well.

Finally, Jesus tells us that this peace is found when we focus on today. This does not mean we do not save and prepare for the future. It simply means that we do not fret and worry about tomorrow, much less years down the road. We are to seek the will of God today. When we seek the Lord’s will today, we will have peace today, and will be able to bless others even more.

Our heavenly Father cares for us. When we are focused on serving Him by serving others, we see that He cares for us and provides for us from the storehouse of His mercy.
