Walk with the Light

Walk with the Light

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

John 11:5-10

There are several different explanations that I have heard about this passage but this simple reasoning makes the most sense to me.

The disciples are questioning Jesus, not just asking Him questions. They do not want to go to Jerusalem. They do not want Jesus killed. They do not remember that Jesus knows exactly what is going to happen there. So, they are actually trying to talk Him out of going.

Jesus’ response is two-fold. First, He is basically saying that I have work to. People work in the daylight so I need to get to work and that work is in Jerusalem. Secondly, He is subtly telling them that what He is doing is the work as the Light of world. If they want to fumble and stumble around, they can go someplace else. However, if they want to be walking in the light, they need to go wherever Jesus goes even if they do not understand.

That is why it is called faith.

We may not know all the information or have a clear path of what we are to do every step of the way, but we are also not blindly following God. We are following Jesus Who is worthy to be followed. He can be trusted to care for us and help us. But most of all, Jesus is always on the right path. If we are not following Him, there is no gray area. We are heading down the wrong road!

For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalms 1:6
