He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Matthew 13:11

11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

Mark 4:11

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Luke 8:10

Jesus said, “It is given.”

That is a very powerful phrase that says so much more than many theologians and religious commentators want to admit.

Jesus’ main argument for teaching in parables is that it is the sovereign right of God to reveal things to some and hide them from others.

Rather than balking at this fact, and declaring that it is not fair, we mere humans should take a step back and think before we object. For we are the creation, He is the Creator. We are His servants, He is the Master. We are His subjects, He is the sovereign King. Whether we like it or not does not matter.

So let’s stop whining and realize something…

If we do understand, it is because God has chosen to have mercy on us. And that’s a good thing!

In our natural, fallen state, we would not only never understand, we wouldn’t have the desire to understand!

 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.”

Romans 3:10-11

Therefore, if we are able to see the beauty of the things of God, if we are able to hear and rejoice in the gospel, if we are able to understand things about the kingdom of heaven; then we need to be thankful and joyful because God has given us the understanding of things that have been hidden from man since the beginning of time.
