While he yet talked to the people, behold, [his] mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Matthew 12:46-50
There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Mark 3:31-35
Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
Luke 8:19-21
We will see later, when we look at the events on the cross, a more detailed view of this, but for now let us see that Jesus did not consider His earthly mother to be the mother of all mankind or the children of God.
If Jesus intended for men to worship Mary or even to pray to her, this seems to me to be the perfect opportunity to tell us! But not only does Jesus not instruct us to do this, He reminds us that our devotion to other humans should not come before our devotion to Him.
The Bible is clear that there is one God. He is revealed to us in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And these three are One God. This may seem difficult to understand, but it is clearly what the Bible teaches.
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
1st John 5:7
The Bible also teaches that we are to pray in the name of the Son: Jesus
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
John 14:13-14
Further, the Bible says that Jesus is the only intercessor between God and men.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1st Timothy 2:5
Mary should certainly hold a high regard in our minds for she was blessed beyond any other woman in history. She was blessed to give birth to the Redeemer.
However, Mary was only human.
