The Stones Cry Out

The Stones Cry Out

And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

Luke 19:39-40

It amazes me that the very people that should have recognized Who Jesus was were the ones who sought to silence and kill Him. The common folks (like you and me), who had a sense of their sins, knew they needed a Savior, and they found one in Jesus. The religious leaders were self-righteous and just wanted to promote themselves. Jesus was a threat to that, so they wanted Him to rebuke the people for calling Him the Messiah. They demanded that Jesus tell the elect of God to lie!

The problem with their idea is that God will receive glory from His creation. If not from men, then the very stones of the ground will shout “Hosanna!”

What a glorious thought!

When I think of Jesus telling the Pharisees this, my mind turns to the following:

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Revelation 6:15-17

Rather than face the judgment of God in Jesus Christ, these unbelievers would rather have the rocks fall on them!

What if these rocks cried out? Can you imagine that?

The unbelievers cry out, and the rock cry back, “Hosanna! Jesus is the King!”

What glorious irony!

What a great privilege we have to sing praises to our King!

What great mercy God has had upon us that we see Jesus as Savior. Truly “His mercy endures forever and ever!”
