And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

Matthew 14:34-36

And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

Mark 6:53-56

When a church is planning to do the work of evangelism in its community, I don’t believe you need a special program, fund raising, kick-off events, or goal tracking. You just need to do a few simple things, and do them every day.

Look at this simple scene. Look at who is involved and what they do. 

1. Those who already knew Who Jesus was took action.
2. Those same people found others they knew needed Jesus’s help.
3. They brought those people to Jesus for help.

See, no special program, just plain love for their fellow man.

Jesus is not walking among us physically today so the pattern that we follow is a little different, but not that different. 

1. If you have had your life changed by Jesus, then you are the one that has a job to do, not someone else.
2. Look around you. Are there people hurting because of sin and sorrow in their lives? Sure there are! Go to them in love, not judgment. Tell them what Jesus has done for you.
3. Invite (bring) them to church. Don’t warn them that they need to repent or burn. Don’t threaten them in anyway, even if they refuse to come to church with you. Just keep encouraging them to come to the place where you found peace and rest. (By-the-way, if you only attend church sporadically, you won’t be very good at this part. In fact, someone needs to find you, and bring you back to church!)

My good friend, Elder Glenn Blanchard, once gave me the best definition of evangelism I have ever heard. He said, “It’s one bum telling another bum where to go to get something to eat.” 

We don’t hear the term “bum” much anymore but we do use the term “homeless.” And that is exactly what we are. This earth is not our home, and church is the best place to go get some spiritual food while we travel along here seeking our long-sought home of glory!

In this following scripture “conversation” means the same thing as “citizenship.”

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Philippians 3:20

So, don’t think of evangelism as someone else’s job or something that needs special planning and programs. Just live a thankful life, loving others, and the opportunities will be white for harvest.
