Prophecy Fulfilled! Prophecy Explained!

All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:4-5

Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.  These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

John 12:15-16

This prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9 foretold another way the people of God would be able to recognize the Messiah when He would come.

As if the innumerable miracles Jesus performed were not enough, this little scene of Jesus coming in on the foal of a donkey was the moment that would tell God’s people that salvation had come to Jerusalem!

An event that is normally reserved for conquering generals and kings after war is now modified to show the true nature of the true King. Jesus does not come in arrogance expecting people to bow before Him. He comes on the lowliest animal to be found. The humility of the King of kings is amazing! But that is one of the signs that He truly is the Messiah.

At first, the disciples did not understand that this scene was a fulfillment of Zechariah’s prophecy. On the day of Pentecost, they were filled with the Holy Ghost and were taught to understand the Old Testament scriptures regarding Jesus. Several of those men were blessed by the Holy Spirit to write down these explanations and fulfillments of prophecy.

Now, we are blessed with the New Testament, written by these men, which shows how Jesus fulfilled all of the prophecies of the Old Testament proving Himself to be the Messiah. If we have any doubts that Jesus can be trusted, all we need to do is look at this scene and many other accounts in the New Testament that teach us that God fulfilled His promises.

Our King and Savior is come!

Hosanna in the Highest!
